When I say I am from Medellín, Colombia, many are quick to think about the stories of Narco Terrorism. I can’t lie, at times I feel a bit ashamed. But I am from there, from Bello, the city next to Medellín, where indeed many of these unfortunate stories did take place.
However, in this very same place, you’ll find the most beautiful emeralds, flowers, landscapes, and of course, the most delicious coffee. It’s filled with talented soccer players and artists like Shakira and the Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez, to name a few. But most importantly, you’ll find some of the warmest and most welcoming people.
While watching the award-winning Netflix production, Narcos, I cried. I cried because I lived and remembered those very same streets so close to home, where I experienced firsthand. The good news about this book is that, within these pages, you will find me on the other side of this drug war. The side fighting for life, including my own.
